Museum De Lakenhal presents five Rembrandt paintings in The Rembrandt Database

18 August 2014

Available as of now on The Rembrandt Database the art historical information and technical documentation of four paintings of Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden: “Bathseba with the letter of David”, “History painting”, “Bust of an old man wearing a gold chain” and “A pedlar selling spectacles”. This last painting was recently bought with support of the Vereniging Rembrandt, Mondriaan Fonds, the Vereniging van Belangstellenden in De Lakenhal and the City of Leiden. The database presents a remarkable X-ray of the painting showing a naked woman (or man) underneath the paint layer. The “History painting” was closely studied in 1975 by Karin Groen. The huge amount of color slides that where kept at the depot of The Netherlands Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE), are now presented on The Rembrandt Database.

We are grateful to Marijke Tolsma (project associate Museum De Lakenhal ), who provided us the art historical information and technical documentation and to Christiaan Vogelaar (curator of Old Master Paintings Museum de Lakenhal), who assisted us in the art historical research. Also thanks to Cor Mulders (librarian at the RCE), who provided us the macro slides of the “History painting”.
