Research data on 6 paintings of The Art Institute of Chicago online

5 December 2019

The Art Institute of Chicago has generously shared recently generated research documents on 6 of its paintings, among which Old man in a gorget and a black cap.

From January to February 2019 The Art Institute of Chicago conducted research into their Rembrandt and Rembrandt-related paintings. Of all the six paintings in their collection, a high resolution normal light photograph was taken, as well as an Infrared Photograph and X-radiographs. For more information on this research project, go to the website of The Art Institute of Chicago: https://www.artic.edu/articles/746/revealing-rembrandts-hidden-decisions. The Art Institute of Chicago has been so generous to share these documents with the scholarly community via The Rembrandt Database, making them accessible online for further research.

Aside from the data received from The Art Institute of Chicago, research data from the Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies in Cambridge, Dr. Peter Klein and the archive of the Rembrandt Research Project, was made available online through The Rembrandt Database as well.

Many thanks to Kimberly Frost (Graduate Intern Paintings Conservation) and Allison Langley (Head of Paintings Conservation) for providing us with the research data and for working in close collaboration with the RKD on the online presentation.
